Two sons of Mr. and Mrs. John Simola of Brimson are in the service: John, Jr. in the Merchant Marines, working out of Norfolk, Va.; and Pfc. Wayne, with the tank destroyers, U. S. Army at Camp Hood, Texas. Pfc. Wayne Simola's wife, the former Julia Alemini of Ely, is teaching school at Embarrass.

John E. Simola Sr., 77, of rural Aurora died Wednesday day, June 3, 1998, in the skilled nursing facility of White Community Hospital, Aurora, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born May 16, 1921, in Brimson, Minn., to Hjalmer and Edla (Tammi) Simola. He resided in Two Harbors for several years prior to moving to Aurora in 1954. He traveled the world as a heavy equipment mechanic working in Iceland, Liberia, East Africa, Somolia, Kenya and Turneffe Island Lodge in the Caribbean. His travels also took him to Spain, Portugal, Finland, Denmark, Italy, France, and Holland. Locally he worked for the Iron Range Railroad in Two Harbors, Foley Brothers Construction in Hoyt Lakes, Woodrich Construction and Lamppa Construction.
He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Two Harbors and the former Moose Lodge of Aurora. He also served with the CC Caps during the 1930s. He married Jeanette E. Johnson on September 30, 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jeanette; and a twin brother at birth. He is survived by his son, John Simola Jr. of Monticello, Minn.; grandsons Erick, Jeff and Tim Simola, all of Monticello; brothers Wayne (Esther) and William "Bill", both of Brimson; sisters Vienno Walkama of Makinen, Esther Ellingsen of Two Harbors and Ruth (Harry) McKinney of Brimson; and a special friend, Ellen Sandstedt of Palo.
Visitation: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. funeral service Saturday in St. Mark's Luthern Church, Palo. Rev. John Reppe officiating. Graveside service at 2 p.m. Saturday in Two Harbors Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Quayle-Schuster-Truman-Muhich American Legion Post of Aurora. Arrangements by Ziemer- Moeglein Shataye Funeral Home of Aurora.

Brimson -- At a candle-light ceremony, September 30, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, marriage vows were exchanged by Miss Jeanette Everelda Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl P. Johnson, Two Harbors and John Erick Simola, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hjalmer Simola of Brimson.
Before the alter banked with flowers, Rev. J. O. Jorgenson read the double ring ceremony. Tradition nuptial music including the bridal processional and recessional was provided by Miss Lorraine Anderson. Miss Edith Anderson sang "O, Promise Me," and a bridal "Prayer."
Attending the bride were her sister, Mrs. Wilber Oling, as matron of honor, Miss Ruth Simola and Miss Esther Simola, Brimson, sisters of the groom, Miss Viola Oling and Miss Mildred Oling as bridesmaids. Mr. Simola had as his best man his brother, William Simola, and Wilbur Oling, Parnell Johnson, Charles Dinnenn, Duluth, and Donald Beckman of Brimson were ushers. The bride's father, Mr. Carl Johnson, gave the bride in marriage.
In keeping with the colonial wedding, was the bride's gown of ivory satin which was fashioned on colonial lines with a train. From her headress fell a veil of finger-tip length. Mrs. Simola carried a colonial bouquet centered with gardenias and encircled with gladioli.
All the bridal attendants wore floor-length dresses of similar style. The matron of honor wore a gold dress and the bridesmaids alternated in rose and blue. Each wore a contrasting coronet of tiny flowers and net with double streamers down the back and carried colonial bouquets of double gladioli tied with matching ribbon.The cameo locket worn by each of the attendants was a gift from the bride.
After the wedding trip, the bride will return to Duluthwhere she is employed by the Coolerator Company. The bridegroom will report to San Francisco for assignment to officers' candidate school of the Merchant Marine.

Nuptial parties for Mrs. John Simola include a shower given by friends and family in Two Harbors, Sept. 23. Many Brimson friends attended the shower at which the bride received a variety of useful gifts.
A part and dance at the Bassett Hall in Brimson is planned for Saltruday evening, October 7.
