bFind Worker Dead Along R.R. Tracks
Herbert Kroeger Killed In Accident Here This Morning
/b A 44-year old Mankato defense worker was found dead this morning along a railroad right of way about a mile north of the Union depot. The victim was Herbert P. Kroeger of 120 Pine street and Deputy Coroner Dr. Roy Andrews said that he had been struck by a passing train.
Kroeger, who was apparently taking a short cut along the tracks on his way to work at the Little Giant company, was found by another defense plant worker who summoned railroad men and police.
The accident happened along a stretch of track running in a wide curve below the old stone quarries and Dr. Andrews said that he believed that Kroeger was waiting for a train to pass when he was sideswiped by a swaying car. One side of his head was badly crushed, the deputy coroner said, and it was this injury which resulted in his death.
      b
Dr. Andrews said that no inquest into Kroeger's death would be called./b
Police said that Omaha railroad officials were checking this morning to determine which train might have struck Kroeger but so far neither the time of the accident nor the train involved had been determined. The body was found at 6:45 a.m.
A single man, Kroeger had been employed in the Little Giant company machine shop since November, 1942. Police said that he was in the habit of walking to his job along the stretch of track where he met his death.
The victim was an uncle of Clarence Schaible, 1902 Third avenue, who was fatally injured April 11 when a tank of fuel oil exploded, burning him and razing a combination garage and shed at his home.
