    • Charles Alvin "Nick" Nicol

KNOX CITY, Mo.'97Charles Alvin Nick" Nicol of La Plata, formerly of Knox City, died Sunday afternoon (Aug. 15, 2004) in the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, where he had been a patient since June 23. Death was due to complications after surgery.

Mr. Nicol was the first born of Howard "Ding" McConnell Nicol and Nellie Leona Pulse Nicol of north of Knox City, born July 14, 1930.

He grew up in the Colony area and attended Brushy and Knox City schools.

In 1954, he married Mary Lou Gregory of La Belle, and to this union two children were born: Charles Gregory "Greg" Nicol, of Lincoln, Neb., and Catherine Sue Nicol of Chino, Calif. He later married Laverne Klocke Hawkins, and she died in 1987.

He leaves behind his longtime companion, Virginia Slightom of La Plata; his son, Greg and wife, Karen, alone with one step-grandson, Corrie Svehla; his daughter, Cathy; one brother, John Will Nicol and wife, Judy, of Knox City; three sisters, Mary Joy Sayres and husband, Ercel, of Knox City, July Rolfe and husband, Ernie, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Sandra Browning, and husband, Jim, of Edina; and many nieces and nephews who adopted their "Uncle Charley." He also leaves behind the Slightoms who welcomed him as part of their family for 13 years.

Mr. Nicol was a retired heavy machinery operator, a car salesman for several dealerships in the area, had loved auctions, and bought and sold antiques. He sold garden produce in the summer and was known for his large Panama straw hat.

He and Virginia traveled all over the United States and had a passion for all forms of racing, especially auto racing. He was acquainted with many drivers and racing enthusiasts and received get-well wishes from the drivers at the Knoxville Nationals held last week. He was a regional front-runner in the early days of racing and had driven at all of the nearby tracks.

He enjoyed attending bluegrass music festivals and met with a group of musicians every Wednesday night just to hear the bluegrass sound. He loved bird hunting and the outdoors, was a "people person," and his numerous friends enjoyed his joking attitude. He lived his life to the fullest and will be missed by many.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edna by the Pastor Charles Sharpe, a longtime friend. Burial will be in La Belle Cemetery in La Belle.

Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel in Edina.

An expression of sympathy may be made to the Charley Nicol Memorial Race to be held at a later date or to the charity of the donor's choice. The memorials may be left at or mailed to the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, Mo. 63537
